The Chilean Society
When I think of Chilean society’s behavior, a
lot of words come to my head. Maybe, because of my lack of English vocabulary
I’ll sound a little bit rough when I write about Chilean people, but in this
precise moment I can’t help it.
First,
Chilean society is still a narrow-minded society. Tradicionalist,
old-fashioned, you name it. Concerning gay people, I think we´re one of the
worst countries in the area. We are improving in this topic, but it is not
enough.
We
spend too much time criticizing whatever thing the other people have been
doing. We don´t focus in our business, but in the others all the time. We’re
shy, especially when men are near of a beautiful woman. We are experts in
deceiving. And I think this is going to be a bad thing to say, but I consider that
is a horrible truth: we are ignorant.
The
Chilean society is ignorant, rude and undisciplined. We see it every day, when
we walk in the streets of our cities, watching tv, etc.
However,
we also have good things as a society. We’re tough, fighters and even an
earthquake can’t bring us down. In this moments, when a part of our population
is suffering, we bring out the best of ourselves to help the people in moments
of need. We are very generous, as Teleton can prove it.
Chilean people tend to categorize
everything and everybody. “She’s blond so she’s stupid”, or “he is poor so he’s
a thief”; are two of a large group of phrases that are said by Chileans. We
only see what we want to see, especially with people we love. It’s hard for us
understand that those persons are imperfect, make mistakes, etc.
Well,
if someone reads this, that person would say to me: “if you don’t like the
country, why don’t you leave it, you fucking asshole?” But I love my country, I
want to be part of it and most of all, I want to see when it changes for good,
and I’m certain that that’s going to happen, only if all of us are committed
with that challenge.
Greetings,
Juan Barrera Marchant
